AvantHealth organized a bridging and networking visit to introduce the palm oil industry to our friends in the medical fraternity. SOP led by COO Mr Eric Kiu, was a graceful host to Malaysian doctors – Dr Jack Wong, Pengarah Hospital Miri and Head of CRC Hospital Miri, Dr Law Wan Chung, President of the Malaysian Society of Neuroscience (MSN) and neurologist at Hospital Umum Sarawak, Dr Looi Irene, Head of CRC Hospital Seberang Jaya, Dr Hor Chee Peng, Senior Medical Officer, Hospital Kepala Batas.
The morning roundtable discussion proceeded with an introduction by Mr Eric to SOP and the current status/challenges of palm oil industry in Malaysia, Dr Jack on the impressive achievements at Hospital Miri, and Dr Law on the achievements and pursuits of MSN. AvantHealth’s Dr Fung then shared about our experience with tocotrienols in clinical research. This fruitful discussion saw many insightful ideas exchanged between all parties. Then, guests were invited to visit the Lambir Estate and Palm Oil Mill to learn and observe actual palm oil processing – from harvesting to milling. They also had a hands-on experience in lifting heavy fresh fruit bunches at the grading site and did a walkthrough each stage of the palm oil milling process.
It was an eye-opening experience for the doctors and helped them understand more about the production of the palm oil. The group adjourned to a durian tasting session at the estate followed by lunch which sealed the aim of this visit. The visit was a success in bridging the relationship between people on 2 very different areas of Malaysia’s driving forces – now with a better mutual understanding and many ways of collaborating moving forward.
